FLAGEY presents THE PHILOSOPHY FESTIVAL
Founded in Brussels in 2006, the “Festival van de Filosofie” aims at establishing a forum for philosophical reflection about Europe. It means to address, to invite and to inform a wide and varied audience, including children and youngsters.
It does not equate “reflection” with philosophy in any narrow sense but it regards other disciplines such as theatre, music, dance, sculpture, film and video also as reflective modes of expression.
To bring philosophy closer to the greater public is the organization’s most essential goal. It deems reflection socially relevant and culturally important.
The 'festival van de filosofie' is founded by some philosophers - Anna Luyten (president), Ann Meskens, Marijke De Roeck, Frank Albers and cultural manager Hugo De Greef. Johan Reyniers is the acting curator of the Festival’s first edition, which will take place in Brussels on November 17-18, 2007.
This year’s theme is ‘Europe and Its Borders’, using the term ‘borders’ in its broadest sense.
Every year, the Festival will also pay extra attention to one philosopher whose thinking it deems especially relevant to the philosophical queries and cultural challenges of today. This year the focus will be on Michel de Montaigne.
The Festival is based at Flagey, a stunning art deco building in the heart of Brussels which is home to both the Flemish and French-speaking communities of this country. Flagey used to house the Belgian Broadcasting Company - many of the Festival’s lectures and debates will take place in old, intact radio studio’s with their amazing wooden panneling and un rivalled acoustics.
The 2007 program -still under construction at this point- includes not only philosophers but also writers, journalists, actors, dancers, film makers and performers. It offers a mixture of lecture and debate, text and image, urging the audience not only to listen but also to participate, to question, to challenge.
Saturday’s activities will be rounded off with a Grand Debate involving some of the major thinkers and writers of today. (Names are to be announced at a press conference in early September.)
The Festival also caters to the young ones, with special performances and philosophy workshops tailored to the interests and capacities of toddlers and teens. This part of the program enjoys the support of the Belgian Society of Philosophy and Education and it is also meant to highlight UNESCO’s World Day of Philosophy, scheduled that same weekend.
The Festival will also host a book fair that focuses on thought and philosophy. (The Palace of Karel van Lotharingen - another architectural gem in the heart of Brussels - has already expressed interest in organizing the fair next year. In addition, the Royal Library of Belgium (Koninklijke Bibliotheek) has also expressed great enthusiasm and a keen interest in contributing towards the success of the fair, for instance through the staging a large exhibition of some of its European treasures. )
These are just a few plans and proposals. There are more.
Next year, we plan to invite several prominent European philosophers to the European Parliament to address the general public about their views on Europe and to do so in a way that renders Europe less abstract to the minds of the many while it offers those of us who are professionally involved in European issues and policies European some inspiring intellectual challenges.
Some of Europe’s most distinguished thinkers, including Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Claudio Magris and Tzvetan Todorov, have already reacted warmly to our proposal and are willing to participate. In subsequent years the ‘Festival van de Filosofie’ intends to maintain “Europe” as its central theme, so as to render this hub of critical thinking about Europe a palpable presence in the cultural landscape of Brussels, Belgium and beyond.
We believe that this festival can develop into a large European ‘House of Thought’ comprising many different chambers and halls that can accommodate and stimulate a great variety of people to think critically about this continent and this culture in many different ways. Of that House we want to lay the first stone in 2007.

Elle ne prêche que fête et bon temps: Une mine triste et transie, montre que ce n'est pas là son gite.’, écrit Michel de Montaigne. Qui ose encore dire que la philosophie est ennuyeuse ? Soucieux de rendre les thèmes philosophiques accessibles à un public aussi large que possible, Flagey présente les 17 et 18 novembre prochains le premier Festival de la philosophie. L’Europe est le thème central de la première journée. Au travers d’un large éventail d’activités, des philosophes, écrivains, journalistes et dramaturges belges et étrangers débattent de toute une gamme de petites et grandes questions européennes. Un programme pour enfants est conçu pour mettre la philosophie à la portée des plus petits. La seconde journée porte sur l’œuvre de Michel de Montaigne.
‘Ik ken niets dat zo vrolijk, opgeruimd en blij, ik zou bijna zeggen, zo uitgelaten is als de filosofie! Zij predikt louter feest en vrolijkheid,’ schreef Michel de Montaigne. Wie durft er nog te beweren dat filosofie saai is? Flagey wil filosofische thema’s voor een breed publiek toegankelijk maken en organiseert op 17 en 18 november het eerste Festival van de filosofie. Europa is het centrale thema van de eerste dag. In een brede waaier van activiteiten buigen Belgische en internationale filosofen, schrijvers, journalisten en theatermakers zich over een veelheid van grote en kleine Europese kwesties. Een kinderprogramma maakt filosofie ook voor de kleinsten toegankelijk. De tweede dag draait rond Michel de Montaigne.

La première journée est placée sous le signe de l’Europe, ses frontières géographiques et ses barrières mentales. Comment est née l’Europe ? Quels mythes anciens et nouveaux entretenons-nous dans notre quotidien ? Où en sommes-nous arrivés et où allons-nous ? Où commence et où finit l’Europe ? Quelle est la différence entre l’Europe historique et l’Europe politique d’aujourd’hui ? Toutes ces questions sont au centre d’une série de séminaires, de débats et d’entretiens. Un dictionnaire philosophique ‘live’ présente les concepts-clés de vingt et un siècles de réflexion philosophique. Il y aura aussi des films, des installations vidéo, un marché du livre et un salon philosophique. La journée s’achève par un grand débat et un Grand Discours Européen.
De eerste dag staat in het teken van Europa en zijn grenzen: geografische grenzen en de grenzen in de hoofden. Hoe is het met Europa allemaal begonnen? Welke oude en nieuwe mythes hebben ons bepaald en bepalen ons vandaag ook nog? Waar zijn we aanbeland en waar gaan we naartoe? Waar begint en eindigt Europa? Wat is het verschil tussen het historische Europa en het huidige politieke Europa? Deze vragen staan centraal in een reeks van lezingen, debatten en causerieën. Een live filosofisch woordenboek presenteert de kernbegrippen van vijfentwintig eeuwen van denken. Daarnaast is er film, zijn er video-installaties, een boekenmarkt, en een filosofisch salon. De dag culmineert in een groot slotdebat en een Grote Europese Toespraak.

Parallèlement au thème central de l’Europe, le Festival de la Philosophie s’intéresse à un éminent penseur. Le philosophe et humaniste français Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) est le fondateur de l’essai moderne et de la réflexion personnelle. Un symposium est consacré à son œuvre et à cette forme de réflexion qu’est l’essai philosophique.
Naast het centrale thema Europa schuift het Festival van de filosofie ook één markante denker naar voor. De Franse humanistische filosoof Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) is de grondlegger van het moderne essay en van het persoonlijke denken. Aan hem, aan zijn werk, en aan het essay als denkvorm wordt op zondag 18 november een symposium gewijd.
